Does your business need a non-executive director?

Any non-executive director (nxd) should bring experience, knowledge, fresh insight and a challenging, but supportive, role to the boardroom table. But the package of skills the person possesses may not be all that you as a business want or need at the present time, so you have to carefully consider what you require to move your company forward.

The role of a non-executive director changes depending on the size of the business. As a start-up entrepreneur, if indeed you can afford an nxd, you would in my experience, be looking for someone with a background or experience in your field or sector.

You would be hoping that the nxd can not only help guide your business growth, drawing on their own previous career success, but also open new doors. I meet so many small business owners who believe that an nxd is an extension of their new business strategy and perhaps at that level the role is. Once an nxd understands your business, your offer, your product or service then maybe they can introduce you to prospects, to trade partners and suppliers.
